tbh looking back on it i don't really see even how MLP became a big deal in the first place. I remember ACTUALLY 5 and a half years ago someone showed me it and i just thought it was pretty ok. But then i saw the fanbase and everything and i just kinda got sucked into that a bit... I can pretty much say it'd be the equivalent of today saying "oh hey did u watch that show adventure time" and then if people started going completely crazy over it. All the cringe and shit over the years has basically made MLP into something that makes people call you a faggot for even watching it casually and not being a fan.
