Current and Future FRG Projects

I've been made aware that it's a bit difficult to find info on some of the interesting current and future projects I am working on, and their schedulings, so I figured I'd make a post to indicate some stuff that is going on behind the scenes, and talk about some experimental changes I want to try on TTT. Do note - this list does not include the obvious seasonal events, cosmic bosses, or other smaller updates, those are to be expected. These are things that I've discussed in discord but not actually made any official statements about them.

Water Treatment Chambers
This is what I am currently working on. WTC is a standalone "parkour" and "jump puzzle" map, made by parade (coded by me). I hope to release this later today, or tomorrow. You can read more about it in parade's thread here.

FRG TDM
I have commissioned Twentysix to develop a 'bare bones' TDM mode we can use to test out how an FRG TDM server would play out.

On FRG TDM all traits will be dampened pretty heavily. Players will have 'shields' that regenerate after a few seconds of not taking damage. Players can not have traits proc on them or die until their shields are depleted. Very similar to Halo style shields. The exact shield amounts and hp amounts have yet to be decided, and will be decided during the play tests (we will see what feels best).

We will be trialing this to see if it's fun. If it's fun it will probably stick around, if it proves fun enough I will add scroll progression and dailies to it.

FRG Survive 2 (working title)

Survive 2 has been delayed numerous times. I'm sure a lot of you are wondering why. Well I will outline exactly why, and why it's actually a positive thing.

At first survive 2 was supposed to just be... Survive 2. Pretty simple really - New map, new zombies, and a way to end the run via a boss fight. As you may know by now, when parade and I get passionate about something, we get a little ambitious and like to push the boundaries. This has caused Survive 2 to turn into so much more than just a sequel.

Survive 2 is a rogue-like lite mode that is nearly entirely modular and supports multiple maps, and the way I have set it up allows every map to completely change how the mode functions. On top of that I made a web-based control panel we can use to tweak each maps cfg settings.

The core 'rogue-like' elements are presented to you in the form of upgrading weapons. When you spawn in, you will be able to choose one primary and one secondary weapon from a number of options presented to you.

Once you do that, you can upgrade each weapons stats via 'stat stations'. Fully upgrading a weapons stats will bump it up to the next rarity class (i.e. Rare -> Legendary). This serves 2 purposes; 1. It allows you access to more and better stats, making your weapon deal more DPS, and 2. It allows more trait slots and access to better traits.

You add traits to your guns via 'trait stations'. These will list a number of random traits on them, and their requirements to unlock. You will just select the one you want and it'll apply to your weapon!

There will be some really nutty builds you'll be able to do, which adds to replay-ability and the overall fun factor of the event.

That's just a couple bits of info about the event, and while it was definitely scope-crept(much like Tribulation was), I think it will be a better event because of that. I apologize for all the delays, but let me remind you that I am just one person and can't do everything at once! I would rather delay something and have it be as good as it can be, than rush out something unfinished.

I plan to get back to work on this post-easter, but I am in no rush personally.

FRG Slayer

FRG Slayer is a fairly simple new persistent PVE mode I want to start developing this year. FRG Slayer will be a way to progress through things like the bm pass without needing to rely on other players to be online. The mode will focus on completing 'slayer tasks', which are assigned to you via an npc on the lobby. You will get a slayer task (which is kill x mobs), then be able to join the pve server and seek out the monsters and slay them. Completing a task will grant xp to all applicable sources, on top of slayer XP. Your Slayer Level will be used to determine what monsters you can actually fight and damage. This also includes a new series of bosses I will be making, that have unique loot. These bosses are still much to be decided, but definitely will need specific slayer levels to fight them properly (might even have rare boss slayer tasks).

FRG Boss Rush

That's right, FRG Boss Rush is still on the table. A few months ago I made some significant progress with player skill trees, it made things a lot more interesting and is one more step in the right direction.

BR needs more bosses, and unique loot to self sustain. But I definitely want to work on it over the summer.

Those are some of the main projects I want to work on this year. I don't know if I will accomplish all my goals this year, but I hope to.

Now on to some experimental changes I'd like to try on TTT. I am considering trying out some basic across-the-board trait dampening on TTT only to see how it impacts gameplay. I know some will be split on it, but I think it's pretty clear people aren't having fun on TTT much anymore. Some blame the traits, some blame sweaty people. So I think it might be interesting to test this. What do you guys think of this?

FRG 2022 Goals

Hello fellow Furrunners, I know I'm a little late on the new year but I wanted to take some time to address the community as a whole since it has been almost exactly a year since Parade and I have taken over managing.
I would like to discuss here what we acomplished in the last year and what Parade and I have made plans for the coming year.

The biggest change that came this year was the reforming/rewriting of the rules of the server as well as punishment guidelines. Our work on these two things specificly have laid the groundwork for a lot of what we'd like to accomplish as Managers in 2022.

In tangant with this our biggest goals this year include working on a better system to help discourage toxic behavior on the server as well as better utilization of the tools we already have in place. I’m sure certain players have noticed harsher punishments during more tense times on the server cough giveaways cough and with discord's introduction of the timeout feature hopefully joking around a banter will get to the point of mindless flaming and harrassing far less often.

In addition to this, Parade and myself both feel that finding a system that allows us to be more lenient with whos on the staff team as well as streamlining the prossess a bit more would be a major factor in creating a better atmosphere for the server in general.

And that is what the majority of our focus will be on this coming year, please keep in mind that a lot of the more major reforms to our rules and staffing move slow due to many reasons (Both Parade and I being very busy people IRL, Brass being very busy with constant updates to the server, poor communication with the staff team at times etc.) so please have patience with us and understand that we try our best.
A few smaller goals for the year also include:

-Cleaning up the Discord a bit (Deleting unnecessary channels, roles)
-More Forum esc stuff being intergrated into Discord such as commenting on apps or creating player reports.
-Hosting a community meeting where we can discuss the current state of the server and where to go from here management wise.

Finally, I will leave you folks off with a few friendly reminders.

I cleaned up the forums recently for a reason, I currently check them everyday and handle player complaints/unban appeals/etc as quickly as I can. Obvious more simple things can be handled by only one of us making things get done far quicker.

My DMs as well as Parade's are always open uWu for any report of misconduct on the server, but please remember that we can do basically nothing without any form of proof. If you are going to take the effort to complain about something please just take the extra 30 seconds to screencap, shadowplay, or ANYTHING we can use so we don't have to just tell you "tough luck" This also isnt a promise that every minor misstep on the server will be treated with a punishment, many many many situations can be resolved with a short talk over what happened and its important to remember that.

I am your master, I always will be. Nothing short of divine intervention will end my reign over you.

If you have any input on our goals or reasonable additions to them that you feel we can accomplish, don't be afraid to talk to Parade or myself. We both try to reply to as much as we can.

Its been a lovely year with you guys and I'm excited for another year of epic gaming moments. Thanks for putting up with my bullshit and hope you all had a lovely holiday season.

-Mousey

PS. I asked Parade if he had anything else to add and this is what he said:

"I am the all seeing eye. I am the benevolent of all true spirits. Nothing can contort my mind by the conservations of your surreptitious ideas. I will display acts of truthfulness to our fellow furrunner gamers, and know that we are all deep inside, furries"

You may have been wondering what exactly happened yesterday. I'll explain it here.

I went to bed late after doing the 1v1 tourney, I was woken up soon after with word that Inventories weren't loading. I woke up, checked it out, the database server was stuck in an infinite loop of starting up and shutting down. A scheduled update went sideways according to the host.

Anyways, that wasn't a problem because I was able to access it and dump the database files off of it using a separate boot drive. Plus even if I couldn't FRG's databases are backed up daily automatically offsite. So I wasn't too worried about that. I decided to wipe the entire machine after getting the database files off of it, and re set it up from scratch, then re-upload the database files to it. That was going smoothly, however, while in the middle of this, my personal HDD shot up to 100% disk usage when I tried to open a folder. It froze windows, eventually freezing everything leading me to shut it off manually.

After I did that, it would not reboot. I took the HDD out and it booted up fine. I then tried to put the drive in grass' pc, and went thru a bunch of bullshit to get that to work. It showed up in windows/bios, but I couldn't browse it. It would slow her pc way the fuck down trying to access it. So I decided to take it out and potentially try getting into it some other day with linux.

I have a network accessed storage device I purchased with 2 4TB HDD's setup with a RAID 1 setup. I did this a few months ago when I noticed my HDD acting up. The problem was I focused almost purely on backing up all of my gmod work, I didn't really think about my personal files as much so I missed a decent chunk of those. The last time I backed up my gmod stuff was the 10th at 5 AM, so I only lost a day and half's worth of work on tribulation. I can live with that. The problem is, I lost a lot of my personal files and projects outside of gmod. Webserver stuff, side projects, source for the FRG launcher, other tools I've built, etc.

Ontop of that, a really really dumb user error on my end made me lose the master passwords to the admin/root accounts to all of our servers. I saved them in an encrypted file, but like a dumbass I named it something generic, not realizing I had another file named the same thing in a different directory from well before this file. So.. when I originally backed up 'important files' I backed up the wrong fucking password file.

I still had access to the servers because I had the passwords saved and encrypted in windows credential manager, but there wasn't any up to date methods to obtain those. But since I still had access under the admin/root accounts, I managed to resolve it in the end. Dodged a bullet there.

All of this running on ~ 2 hours of sleep. I had a massive migraine, and probably lost years of my life due to the stress levels alone.

I'm happy to say everything is running smoothly now, I have a new HDD in place and I'm in the middle of transferring all my gmod files back to it. For now, and as much as I can tell, the only thing I lost of immediate importance is the tedious work I did on trib during the 10th. Which was basically the final thing I needed to do before the last big test. I'll be redoing it all tonight once I get everything setup again. I will also be issuing a goodie bag for the downtime. Thank you all for your patience, especially with how long Tribulation has been taking.

After discussing it with current staff, then talking with the two for awhile in a discord call, it is now official! - Mousey and Parade are now 2 new general managers for FRG. Having 2 of this rank will lessen the workload for all 3 of us, and it should be a smooth ride forward.

We had a good discussion on important issues on the server that they will be helping to resolve, such as unclear rules, incompetent +members, and staff in general being on different pages. We will provide more information on these matters, and how we'd hope to improve them soon enough.

I'd like to thank them for volunteering their time here forward to the roles, as they can get pretty tough to maintain sometimes.

Also as a reminder, the Seasonal is ending on the 15th, and double XP for the remainder of it starts now!

Well the server was setup today, and we just finished testing it, and it went great!

Thanks to everyone who helped me test the new hardware.
We saw quite the massive performance increase!

Here's a few clips showing stuff that would normally chug the server:

We also did a 32 player kraken, and it went very smooth. It didn't turn into a slide show, and was very stable, and very playable!

I will be swapping all of the TTT servers, and the lobby server over to the new machine most likely tomorrow!

This means, when I do the swap, there will be a brief downtime. Not long, and the TTT servers, and Lobby server will have a new IP address. You can pre-favorite them now if you'd like, via legacy browser>favorites>add server:

Today marks one of my greatest fuck ups in the some 7 years that I've been working with gmod Inventory systems.

Last night, I rushed out a fix for a major bug, with what I thought was extensive testing. I simply didn't rejoin to test if everything was being saved/loaded properly after the fix, I assumed it was all good. Boy was I wrong.

This small 1 line oversight caused the worst duping FRG has ever seen on this scale. I was sleeping most of the day, so I woke up late to pretty much pure chaos. After working on it from 8Pm to what is now going on 5AM. I can confidently say I have cleaned up most of this mess I have caused. Not ALL of it, but most.

All in all there were a lot of high end items, and coins duped. Surprisingly a very FEW amount of people actually exploited this.

I ended up having to scramble and think of quick ways to get and analyze the data we have, due to my fuckup, checking item unique ID's wasn't an option (the fuck up stems from the item UID's actually changing upon putting them in storage, due to a 1 line oversight), which is the foundation for my robust dupe detection methods. So all of these completely flew under my detection systems.

I wrote a script to get all players who've played since I applied the fix above, and then go through all of their items in every database (bank, inventory, storage, etc), print out any suspicious stack amounts to a file, then myself and the awesome staff in discord tediously went through and picked out the really suspicious entries. Which I manually went in and repaired.

After that I had to write a system to use the same player list above, but instead cross-reference every single item with every single other item, from the pool of players. This allowed me to print a list of items that were likely dupes (matching stats/traits is HIGHLY unlikely for a lot of weapons, as they are saved as float values (0 - 1 with decimals)). After I did this, the awesome staff team yet again helped us out greatly, by helping me go through every entry and add the really suspicious ones to a spreadsheet.

Once I had this data, I had to implement various solutions. One of them was automated, the rest I fixed by hand. The automated one added any items that were at risk of being deleted, but weren't dupes, to the Item Queue from storage. So when you join if you get spammed with a ton of items, they were removed from your storage devices due to this bug potentially breaking them. If you happen to get multiple of an item, or notice one is duped, please do inform me.

TL;DR - I fucked up, staff is awesome and helped me out greatly by going through a buttload of logs. when you join if you get spammed with a ton of items, they were removed from your storage devices due to this bug potentially deleting those specific items. If you happen to get multiple of an item, or notice one is duped, please do inform me.

I will be booting the servers back up momentarily. Thank you all for your support, and I'm terribly sorry for the major inconvenience I have caused you all. I'll make it up to you

Seeing the constant negativity lately, I really need to remind people that staff are players too. You don't need to agree with every decision they make, but if the way you express it is being a dick to them, that is not okay.

Without staff, the server would be pure chaos. It's NOT A JOB, it's a role. They volunteer their time to help maintain the order of the server, which is frankly NOT FUN AT ALL IN ITSELF. Don't tell them to 'do their jobs' when it's far from a job. A lot of you guys seem to think they are out to get you, that couldn't be further from the truth. Keep in mind if staff were even half as bad as some of you think, you would've been long since banned by them.. Don't ya think..?

More than a few staff have stopped playing partially because some of you make the server unenjoyable with your constant attacks and disrespect towards them. That is not okay, and those of you who continue it will be dealt with by me.

Bottom line: Be respectful to staff members. They are fellow players as well, we're all here for fun, and when you make things not-so-fun by constantly flaming them directly, or through passive aggressive remarks, it's not okay. I think it's healthy for players to not be afraid to state if they are displeased with a decision staff(or myself) has made, but please do so in a more respectful way, and remember staff are not robots. They are people with emotions too. If the way you express yourself involves attacking the person, that's not okay.

I encourage people to come to me or unpoke if they are displeased with a staff member's decisions on something, but please have supporting evidence.

I'd like to end this by thanking our staff members for all of their hard work, and putting up with these people, and my sporadic schedule for things. Even the ones who may not be active anymore, still at one point helped a great deal. We wouldn't be where we are without you guys helping the server out. Even if some players don't appreciate you, just know that I very much appreciate all of you.

I'd just like to make an official announcement letting you all know that I will be in the states from September 3rd to October 3rd. I had this planned out for almost 2 months now, and the timing really sucks with all the new people and what not as my updates will not be as consistent as usual, but it absolutely can not be put off. My mother and other members of my family are not in good shape, and I need to spend some time with them. I have not seen any of them in 4 years, since I went through the very long and tedious process of becoming a Permanent Resident of Canada, and it's been rough.

I will not have access to my main PC, only a subpar laptop and satellite internet. I will try to do what ever updates I can while there(I'll probably also be at Jake's place for a bit, so I can do some stuff there on his PC). Grassx will be here to take care of any server related issues, but anything too technical, I will have to try to find the time to handle.

This years next 'ejoin event' was originally scheduled to release in October, and parade and I decided it's best to delay that until we both have the proper time to work on it. That said, I still have some cool things planned for you guys in October. Obviously a new crate, new discoveries, and the biggest thing will be a new Solo Boss with some unique loot to chase.

Thanks for your continued support, and sorry for the inconvenience.
and just know I won't stop worrying about the state of the server pretty much nonstop while I'm there.

I'm not the emotional type typically, but man the past 12 hours has been quite the roller coaster of emotions.

As you regulars may have known, our player counts haven't been really increasing for quite sometime now. We were overshadowed by a mass amount of a certain ping-spoofed server on the server browser, despite being here much longer than them. It sucked, but it is what it is.. That said, I was already fully content with our player base, we had a small yet strong playerbase, people that have spent years of their lives here, grew up here, and truly care about FRG. They may have outgrown TTT, but I know a lot of them always come back to check out my latest update, and that means a lot.

No one would've expected the flood of players last night and most of the day today. That was stressful, exciting, and scary all at once. We were not prepared at all, but what blew me away the most, is how the entire community banded together to help all of these new players try to adapt, and show off our features. It shows me how much you guys care about the server, and the community. It made me proud of what we have done here over the past 5 years, it made me want to show people our cool stuff, and feel proud of what I've done personally - I don't feel like that often at all.

So regardless if a lot of the new players stick around or not, I'd just like to say thank you guys for being awesome, and being incredibly supportive of FRG and all the new players. I'm more than happy with just you guys . I've put my all into this server, and it's become a HUGE chunk of my life, it makes the 1000s of hours I've put into FRG all that much more worth it when I see how important it is to others as well, knowing I'm creating experiences people will remember for years.

To the new players, I really hope you stick around, I know it seems a bit overwhelming, and we aren't the cleanest, most user friendly experience, but if you just give us a chance, you might just find something you really enjoy, something that will make gmod feel fresh again for you!

Also I promise you I don't do drugs.

I'd also like to thank Meepen for telling people to check us out while he gets his server up and going. You can find more info about his upcoming server at meep.gg It sounds really interesting, and I hope our communities can flourish and exist together. It doesn't have to be one or the other, people should be able to enjoy what both have to offer!

If you have any questions, just feel free to ping me in discord, or DM me!

Thanks again guys!

Some info about the upcoming Crafting system.

Since I have leaked the next update in the discord, I figured I should make an announcement containing what exactly I said, so that as many people can prepare for the update as possible.

All weapons will have a good use for crafting, so be sure to hold on to them. Crafting has potential to transfer traits from one existing item to your newly crafted item.

Godlikes aren't involved in crafting right now as they turn into godlike shards. Crafting will have its own set of unique craft-only items, and unique base weapons to discover/figure out recipes for.

FRG's upcoming crafting system has some secrets and promotes experimenting with materials to try and find out stuff. But there's an entire level system and what not. You can craft existing items via catalysts, and you can unlock a perk that allows you to have a chance to transfer traits from that catalyst to a craft of a higher tier (not lower or equal). The lower below the catalyst, the less chance the traits will be transferred to your new item. Each weapon can dismantle into materials, and each rarity class has its own specific class of material it can output when dismantling. You can then take low-end materials and upgrade them into the next tier up by using a varied amount of materials. So low end items will be much more useful. You get catalysts from dismantling said items, it's not guaranteed to get them though.

So for example, say you obtain a Heroic pistol of the Phoenix. You could try to dismantle that and obtain a "Heroic Catalyst of the Phoenix" if you get the catalyst, you can then use that in a craft, to craft a brand new heroic item which will also have a chance to get the craft-only base weapons ,and craft-only suffixes/traits. Your end result will also have phoenix too because your initial catalyst had it.

It brings a lot of progression and things to do in general. You can unlock an auto scrap feature as well and catalysts can be used to make keys, not that I think you should use them for that tho. There's a lot more to it than this, but this is what I 'leaked' in the discord, also, all of you private beta testers are still instructed to keep your lips sealed. I would like to be the one to control when more info gets out.

This update is still a little while from completion, but it is mostly complete.

Changes to staff and applications.

We're making some big changes to the application process in an attempt to allow more people to 'shoot their shot' so to speak, and show us if they are actually staff material, as well as to weed out any insufficient staff members.

Staff Applications will be approved about 90% of the time(mods or higher), however, in 2 months time, the applicant will need to post a 'community evaluation' thread, similar to the original application. On the thread, the community will rate your performance, and unpoke and I will decide if you keep the role, or aren't fit for it.

ALL current staff members (not +members) will need to post community evaluations in the new section, any staff that fail to post one within the deadline will be demoted from their position.
You should judge staff based on their behavior/performances starting now, not prior to this, just to give everyone a fair shot to shapen up

After their initial evaluation, staff will need to post one every evaluation period(4 months) in order to keep their position. This date will be announced ahead of time to keep you all informed. Currently the next evaluation period AFTER april, is set to be in early august, 4 months after the deadline for the current ones.

You will need to post your community evaluation application between March 27th and April 3rd. Failure to do so will result in a demotion!

Moderators and higher will be given a new perk to give them something back for helping us out. They will be able to turn the current TTT map into a 'double XP' map (or 2.5x EXP on weekends), this will be usable PER staff member, but have a few hour cooldown per-person.

I'm open to suggestions for other perks for staff members as well.

We hope these changes will help make FRG better, and make staff positions more realistic to go for, allowing almost anyone to give it a shot and prove their worth. As well as making it just a bit more enjoyable to be a staff member here, rather than a buttload of extra work, with little to no payoff.

Keep in mind this is NOT to punish staff, or make things more stressful. This is simply to make the application process less spooky, and open it to a lot more people, letting them show everyone they have what it takes. Negativity on an evaluation doesn't exactly mean you will be demoted, it could just mean we talk to you about things you should improve on.

Community evaluation FAQ:
Q - Who can post on evaluation threads?
A - All players will be able to post on these, and "rate" a person's performance anonymously. Only Unpoke and I will be able to see the replies you post there, just like applications.

Q - How do I post an evaluation?
A - See the community evaluation section here: https://forerunnergaming.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?fid=86

Q - What happens if I don't post a community evaluation thread when the time comes?
A - We will attempt to remind you, but it should be your responsibility to do it. Not posting it may result in a demotion from the rank!

Q - What if I have to go away before I can post my evaluation?
A - If you must go away, please be sure to inform us first. Failure to do so will be seen as the above situation.

Q - Does this mean I have to play all day every day if I want to keep my rank?
A - No. As long as you do a good job, and are on occasionally (or if you post an away/offline for a break), you will be just fine. You will still need to post an evaluation, and as long as we see you on occasionally, inactivity replies on it may not be taken into consideration as much as other replies.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to post on this thread with 'em.

Note: These staff double XP changes will be live within the next few days as I make the system.

Community Crate Series 2

The Community Crate Series is back and is now accepting submissions for the rarity class "Unlikely". The theme for this crate as decided via a poll is "Solar". Likes are locked until September 24, 2017, 3:39 pm(Central).

There are some changes with the way this works this time around:

Likes are locked for a set duration, and when likes are unlocked, you will no longer be able to submit suggestions until that period is over and the next rarity class is opened.

You can only like 3 suggestions per rarity class.

You can only like if you have played in the last 5 days.

You can only post 2 suggestions per rarity class.

The amount of +1's are hidden to everyone but me.

You can now suggest Enhanceable items.

You can now suggest crystals and misc items.

So to outline again here's how the workflow will be:

I announce when a rarity class is active (you will also be able to see on the suggestion page), and for how long, during this time Likes are locked. Once the duration is over suggestions are locked, and you are now able to like suggestions. After a set time, I will announce the items accepted into the crate for the rarity class then I will repeat the process for the next rarity class.

There's also some new rules:

Advertising your suggestion for likes will get your suggestion removed and probably get you banned from submitting them.

Troll submissions may result in a ban from submitting/liking suggestions.

Try and stay within theme as much as you can!

After working on this for the past few days, It's time to find any bugs we can with the new Community Suggestion system! This system will be activated/deactivated when new community crates are in the works. Currently the "Community Crate Series 1" is going to be made after we make sure this system is working okay. The suggestions with the largest amount of likes at the end of the suggestion period(no end date set yet) will be added.

If you are unfamiliar with what I'm referring to see: http://forerunnergaming.org/forums/showthread.php?tid=5490

You can submit a suggestion or browse suggestions via the top bar:

Currently there's not many limitations of this, and this is mainly a test, however submissions can be taken seriously.

Browse the suggestions, click "View" and click the thumbs up icon to like a suggestion. If you don't like one, just don't vote on it. Keep in mind I can see exactly who +1's so I know if people try and spoof +1's via alt accounts.
