It really depends on what tier gun you have.
Corrupted and Relentless level up off of damage.
Angelic, Demonic, Gargutan, and Vengeful level up on just regular kills
Forgotten levels up on Crouched Kills.
Then you have some other tiers that can't drop anymore which I forgot names for.
Also to level up your gun. You will need to right click it and then click 'enhance" on it.
