its based on your MMR. previously chaining wins inflated your badge but your MMR barely increased to line up. The new system tries to keep you closer to your real mmr

This happened because of the change. ELO ranks were changed around, so you could be DMG with the ELO score of a MGE. Therefor when you lose a rank, you still do not have the required ELO for DMG, so you automatically derank. This happened to everyone, including me, and I am now a higher rank than I was before the rank shift.
